Howdy ho readers.
We really lucked out with yesterday’s weather…we arrived in Newport around 2 and enjoyed the sunny skies and [somewhat] warmer temperatures.
After checking into the historic Hotel Viking, we set out on foot in search of fresh chowder.
After Kath consulted the blog world, we headed straight for the Black Pearl.
Warm, doughy rolls hit the spot!!!
The chowder was definitely unique, with lots of tiny clams and herbs, but I kinda missed the huge potato chunks that come in Boston chowder.
I got a somewhat boring salad to go with, but the homemade poppyseed dressing and goat cheese exceeded expectations.
Dessert was treats from a cookie house split three ways!!
The oatmeal butterscotch was the best.
It started to get really chilly at sunset, but the views from the dock were worth braving the cold.
What to do on vacation when the sun sets and its too cold to walk around? Visit a brewery!
We visited Newport Storm and did a tasting of four beers. I’d had the Blueberry and Hurricane ales before, but not the other two. The Blizzard Porter was really good, but tasted similar to most generic porters. The Newport 2010, however, was A-mazing!!! It was sooo complex..heavy on the front, sweet on the finish. Matt and I loved it soo much, that we drove right to a local liquor store a bought a tall one to bring home:)
Dinner was an incredible tasting event that spanned three restaurants and three hours.
The first stop was the Moorings for a bag of seafood doughnuts with a chipotle-maple aioli. These were close you eyes good and much sweeter than I had anticipated.
Stop two was an amazing little nook that served up a modern interpretation of mexican food: Diego’s.
I started with a mojito, which was huge and a fun change of pace from my usual winter beers and spicy reds.
We were all ooo-ing and ahh-ing over the menu, so we decided to share three of the entrees we had been eying…
The Hermosa pizza, which consisted of shredded pork, black beans, pineapple salsa, and spicy baja aioli. Mexican food + pizza = always a brilliant combo.
Dish two was blackened cod served over a salad with jicama and red peppers. The dressing was pomegranate-chipotle and it definitely made this salad.
Lastly, we shared loaded fish tacos, complete with ALL the fixin’s. Can’t really go wrong with these guys…fish tacos tend to make my heart flutter.
The last stop of the night was a swanky wine bar called Fluke. We got a port to share and dessert.
House-made s’mores and sweet potato pie.
Both were small, but sweet and close to satisfying.
T’was a perfect end to our food parade of Newport!

December 13, 2010 at 5:05 pmHaha I can tell you’re not from Rhode Island if you call those “seafood doughnuts”! (Although that’s totally accurate and descriptive :P) I hope you enjoyed your clamcakes! Those are my favorite, and I’m a native 🙂
