Souper Sunday

Cooking

Happy Monday…only one more to go until the Holidays!!

Speaking of Holidays, the Newport mansions were decorated for Christmas and we took a lovely tour of Marble House on Sunday…

We listened to an audio tour and learned all about Alva Vanderbilt and her summer “cottage.” It was the perfect activity for a cold, rainy day in December.

Per the recommendation of Tina, we had lunch at the Seabreeze Cafe in Newport for hot soup and sandwiches. This was a chicken and escarole soup.  It was seriously lacking on the chicken and was a little celery-heavy for me.

My sandwich made up for it though, because it was divine: corned beer + havarti on house-made seeded rye.

We couldn’t leave the Seabreeze without sampling one of the famous grilled muffins, so we all shared a blueberry corn muffin. LOVED this!! It took cornbread to a whole new level.

After a dreary drive home Sunday afternoon, Kath and Kanz put together a fabulous last-minute dinner:) While it was cooking, we popped open a bottle of wine from Sonoma County that Matt’s parents sent us last summer. We also had a taste of this rare Dogfish 120 minute IPA that Kanz found at the liquor store in Newport. THE best IPA I’ve ever had (probably because it didn’t taste like an IPA).

A fabulous soup full of apple chicken sausage, brussels, acorn squash, and kale made with a base of sweet potato broth plus rolls.

After dinner, we headed down the block for a coffee meet-up with local KERF readers. It’s always fun to meet new people in the city. Too bad I’m moving in 6 months:(

Hope you guys had an awesome weekend!

We toured this machine on our honeymoon. Is this the one that belonged to Anderson Cooper’s relatives? Glad you enjoyed a great trip to Newport.
