Man Cooks Dinner

The Working World

Knock, Knock.

Who’s there?

Orange.

Orange, who?

Orange you glad Monday’s over?!!

I am.

I’m trying to stay positive about starting work, but I’m definitely feeling that what-was-I-thinking feeling. I’ve doubted this career so many times!! Hopefully that feeling goes away soon.

It sure is nice going home at the end of the day! I finally got around to doing some things around the house and even worked on addressing save-the-dates! And then I went to spinning for the first time in a while. I’m using a temporary pass to try out the YMCA, and I just can’t decide if I like it or not. The people there are just as nice as can be, but the crowd is a bit older, and thus the classes not quite as lively. But, it was a nice workout nonetheless. And, when I came home, Matt made dinner! TJ’s butternut squash risotto with shredded brussels and shrimp. The butternut def. got me in the mood for fall foods. The sun is different, the air is cooler, things are changing…

Hang in there! All jobs and careers are tough. They don’t call it work for nothing. They have to pay you to do it cause you wouldnt do it otherwise. I’ll bet the biggest issue facing you is the fear of not doing your job well. Relax and try to give yourself permission to not know everything. I would recommend you find some friends and mentors at work so you don’t feel so alone.
I’m rooting for you, and have a feeling it’s going to turn out to be a good year. 🙂

I feel the same way! i just started my first teaching job and definitely am wondering what I was thinking (esp. since I avoided this career for 4 years). And I don’t even get to relax when I get home b/c I need to do hours of grading and planning. I hope this feeling goes away for both of us and we can settle into our new routines.

I think starting new jobs is one of the hardest activities we ever face.

Laura, I have completely been in that place. Realize that even if this is only a temporary place for you, that this time is not wasted. You are connecting with people through your blog who are experiencing similar things, and you are gaining new skills to take with you to your next step – whether that step is part of your current path or an entirely new one. I think you should be commended for being honest about your search for a fulfilling career – very few of us ever are.

I just started my job and feel like I have no idea what I’m doing! Along with being the school psychologist, I’m the team chair. Yikes! Hope I learn fast!
