Low Key

Cooking Life

After eating out a bazillion times with the parents and the birthday/holiday celebration in the middle of the week, I was in need of a low key weekend. Friday night, Matt and I met two Atlanta friends for burgers at the famous Vortex. I had the guac black bean burger and it was honestly one of the best veggie burgers I’ve ever had. I also looved the zucchini fries on the side. Too bad this left me a bad stomach…

Half Pounder, With Buttercream

Amazing Restaurants

That epic dinner on Saturday? It took place at Leon’s in Decatur, a gem that many of you recommended! T’was my restaurant soul mate. Why? Because there was outdoor seating, old garage doors that open in the summer, a long beer list, reasonable prices, a strong menu, a casual atmosphere, a feeling of excitement, and a great dessert. Leon’s has it all. I started with a solid red wine. I think it was a tempranillo, or something full and earthy.…

Exploring the New Hood

Travel

Well, we’re here! It took me about ten minutes to adjust to our apartment and Matt and I were out exploring the neighborhood. Matt’s company helped us find a place to sub-lease and it’s very cute! Oh how I’ve missed living in a place with a sunny bedroom (our Durham apt is like a cave)! I could get used to this:) We are within a short walk of adorable shops and restaurants in an area known as Virginia Highland. Lucky…

Half Pours

Life

I had plans to cook a nice dinner this evening and then life happened. Good life – drinking wine with friends over at West End! I love to sample, so half pours are perfect for me! I got my riesling and then some cava. So delish on a hot night! I came home and was just too tired to cook. So I ate a good old sammie with avocado + bacon – one of my favorite combinations. It’s late and…

Funtastic

Durham Restaurants

This weekend was so.much,fun. I know I say that every weekend, but really, this one was just one of those go-with-the-flow, eat, see friends, and relax in between kind of weekends. Not many people showed up to Fuqua Friday, so we ended up going out to dinner. Sometimes Fuqua Friday can be overwhelming because there’s soo many people to talk to, so it was nice to just eat dinner while chatting with two of our good friends. We tried the…

Potluck: Davidson

Uncategorized

I went to one of two potluck dinners I have this week tonight – a gathering of Davidson people who happen to have settled in Durham, NC! Ok, most of them are associated with Fuqua, but still… Our host did a fabulous job – his apartment was quite elegant and the wine was delicious. When I think of potluck, I think of the gooey crack brownies and the sinful buffalo chicken dip that would appear at my church dinners growing…

An Hour

Uncategorized

Happy hour: one hour of pure relaxation achieved through friends and alcohol. A glass of Riesling for me! After lots of conversation, I was hungry and tired! So I avoided cooking and got one of my favorite salads from Nosh. It’s loaded with bacon, egg, and clusters of candied walnuts. Eaten in record time in front of the TV and washed down with puffins and jelly beans. Oh yeah. I finished my book – How To Eat A Cupcake! It…

Hey, hey. Hows it goin? The weekend is over, but for once I’m a bit relieved. The event I’ve been putting together took place over the weekend and I’m happy to say that everything went pretty smoothly! The other co-chairs and I have been working for a few months to plan the programming for the partners of students who have been admitted to Fuqua. I really believe in the support that the partners organization provides and was excited to be…

Virginia Vines

Travel

The rest of our trip involved wine – lots of swirling, sipping, and savoring in the beautiful Virginia countryside. We stopped at four wineries on the drive up to Charlottesville on Friday. Delfosse was our first stop and by far my favorite in terms of flavor. The owner is french and many of the reds were full-bodied and the whites slightly sweet. We bought a bottle of Chardonnay, which was a big surprise seeing as we’re generally red people. Our…
