Cooking Life Weekends

Happy Monday. Hope y’all had a great weekend.

We did a lot of relaxing and, surprise, surprise, eating!

We mixed it up on Friday night, and instead of pizza and wine, we had thai food and tequila:)  I finally bought some Reposado to have at home and we enjoyed my favorite spirit-forward marg-ish drink:

  • 1 to 1.5 oz reposado tequila
  • .5 to 1 oz orange liquor (like Grand Marnier)
  • juice of half a lime
  • few drops simple syrup

We tried a new Thai place, Thaism, and the food was amazing!! We had pineapple veggie curry and salmon green curry.

We discovered a new season of Transparent is out, and stayed up way too late watching new episodes! I was dragging a bit Saturday.  We spent the morning cleaning our apartment before meeting good friends who were in town from the west coast for brunch. We dined at French Louie, and had an excellent experience. I ordered socca, a french flatbread made of chickpea flour, topped with fried eggs and broccoli rabe. I loved this dish! Usually the only gf bread options on brunch menus are pancakes, so it was nice to have something savory.

Matt spent Emerson’s nap time working, so I went out and did the grocery shopping in addition to getting fitted for some new running shoes. Can I stop here and ask y’all for advice?  I was planning on getting another pair of Brooks Glycerins, but I’m having a lot of trouble with one achilles since returning to running postpartum. The salesperson who fitted me said the Asics Gel Nimbus would probably be better for this problem because it has more lift in the back and a more stable heel cup to take pressure off the achilles.  But then I read reviews of this shoe, and they were terrible.  So which one should I get??

We decided to stay in on Saturday to save some money in the old wallet, and since we both missed pizza night on Friday, that’s what we went with.

We made a bbq shrimp pizza with corn, red peppers, and arugula. We definitely overcooked the shrimp by sautéing them first and then putting them on the pizza (can you put raw shrimp on a pizza and let the oven do the work??)

I remember loving this Malbec years ago, but I’d say it was average. We also enjoyed a mini pecan pie from Noglu that I nearly forgot about in the freezer! Oh, and we watched Dead Poets Society, which was sadder than I was expecting and made me want to get back to working in a school!

Sunday, I enjoyed total body conditioning at the Y with Ashley, and then I was silly enough to think I could bop across the street to the Petsmart for Emerson to meet the Easter bunny. I didn’t have time to shower after class, and Em broke out in hives after having egg whites in a veggie burger (she has a slight allergy, but has never reacted to eggs baked in something). And then, of course, she went nuts when Matt tried to hand her over to the bunny.  We now have a funny picture complete with hives, a sweaty mom in a coat, and a scary bunny.

The rest of the day was spent taking Emerson to the playground, watching Duke lose (so sad), and hanging out with wine + salmon. Matt is taking part of Friday off, so I’m excited for the short week & an Easter trip to Long Island.

Also, I wanted to add that I was so inspired by the speeches and young people leading the march on Saturday. Even though I didn’t march for various reasons, I support sensible gun control laws and laws to improve school safety!! Two places that I donated to in order to support the cause are the Sandy Hook Promise and March for our Lives.

I have foot issues too and found that although several other brands make a neutral shoe, the Brooks Glycerin is the best for me. I heard the new model runs a 1/2 small. have you found that?

Yeah – when I tried them on I had to go to the 8 1/2 when I usually wear an 8

All I wanted to do this weekend was watch March Madness with a beer on the couch. I was 50% successful. I would vote don’t cook the shrimp on the pizza in case they release water?

Sautée the shrimp and top the pizza off with them after the pizza is done cooking.

Thanks! I was thinking of that, but then the shrimp wouldn’t be nicely nestled into the cheese. I guess I’d rather have them cooked correctly and cheesy though.

Have you tried using KT tape to help with your pain while running? I’ve used it for a few issues over the years and it works great.

No! I wouldn’t even know how to use it. But I guess there’s always Google 🙂 thanks!

I’m a huge Asics fan! I have low arches that leads to all sorts of probs in the shins and ankles including plantar fasciitis. I wore the nimbus for a long time but bought the cumulus once bc they were significantly cheaper. I prefer the cumulus bc they are not as heavy and the nimbus feels cumbersome after wearing the cumulus. I always order running shoes from running warehouse. They have huge discounts on prior season colors and excellent customer service.

Thanks! I often order old ones too, but having a hard time finding the nimbus. I’ll check running warehouse.
