A Lazy Weekend

Cooking Life Ramblings

Hello!  It was a gorgeous weekend here in Charlotte and we barely left the house! Friday, some friends invited us to a Seder  (a little late bc so many of their friends were out of town on Easter weekend) and it was lots of fun!  I had never been to one (fun fact: I didn’t have a Jewish friend until college because the rural town where I grew up had zero diversity) and really enjoyed experiencing another religious holiday celebration. Emerson searched for the afikoman and received generous prizes when she found it:) We even got to take home a rich piece of flourless chocolate cake to eat on the couch with The Handmaid’s Tale, and it felt like we were right back on vacation.

As for the rest of the weekend, we didn’t leave the house (not with Emerson at least), because we are trying another round of potty training. Some friends convinced me to try the Oh Crap method back in NYC when Emerson was younger (the author insists you must do it by a certain age which is just dumb), and it was too intense for me – I got super frustrated being trapped in the apartment with no breaks, and I think it put too much pressure on Emerson (plus, she was just young). We are trying a less intense approach this time using some of the general principles from the book (but with rewards!), and I’m trying to just go with the flow and not worry so much about immediate results. The main reason I’m trying it now is because her preschool teacher is happy to work on it when she’s at school (and most kids in her class are training too) and because we have a busy summer of road trips coming up in June and July (and then a baby due in October!!).

It’s also much better doing potty training in NC because it’s warm out and we have a yard, so we aren’t cooped up inside.  Our patio was finished last week (though we are still waiting on the french drains and seeds), so I went to Home Depot and Target and bought some accessories to spruce it up a bit.  We spent lots of time out there this weekend and it was glorious.  I’m so excited to have an [almost] finished private outdoor space! TBD if we have the budget to buy a grill in the next month or two. Matt also spent two hours cleaning our downstairs windows (and rescuing spiders), and I swept the patio and scrubbed some of the mud and grout off the side of our house.

I did a huge grocery trip at Trader Joe’s on Saturday afternoon, and then we settled on the couch for Thai food after Em was down.  Too bad the restaurant messed up my mild curry and my mouth was on fire getting through this plate!  I washed it down with a slice of carrot cake (the cream cheese icing took the edge off:)) so all was ok. I started feeling kicks last week, so I’ve been all about the sugar at night to try and feel more (although I need to tone it down after eating dessert every night in Rosemary Beach…).

This morning, we made blueberry pancakes, and then I checked out a new-to-me cycle studio, Cyclebar. It was such a nice change of pace since I’m mostly been doing Barre at the Y and Popsugar with weights at home. I’ve started having some ligament pain and stretching (at least that’s what I think it is), so I wasn’t exactly able to keep with some of the movements to faster songs; I still loved the music, vibe, and just some good cardio for once.

Tonight, I’m making PB Fingers’ Thai chickpea burgers, and resting up for what I hope will be be the worst of the potty training journey.  Wish us luck and send wine cake.

Hillsborough isn’t rural…??? It’s 15 minutes down the road from downtown Durham/Duke and half an hour from Chapel Hill? LOTS of diversity here, maybe more now with tech, but always has been in local schools with professors’ families from all over the country and world.

30 years ago, Hillsborough was just a few stop lights and fast food places, a Walmart, and a video store:) My high school was in the northern part of the county and drew from rural areas. We even had a strong farming program! Sure, Durham and Chapel Hill are much more diverse, but all the friends I grew up with were from Orange County. There wasn’t much religious diversity at all. Hillsborough has only become the artsy, cool little town in the last 5-10 years, as Durham and Chapel Hill have gotten more expensive and people have moved further from the areas where the jobs are.

When I potty trained my three kids, I used the seat that attaches right to the toilet along with a stool. That way, they became used to the big potty and not have to transition. I also made a small treasure box filled with stickers and small toys that I kept in the bathroom so they could pick from the box every time they used the potty. It worked great! Just take them every 30 minutes or so in the beginning to let them try to go.

I just thought I would mention that in case you are still looking for ideas. 🙂

I can’t wait to see how your patio turns out. It sounds like it will be amazing!

Hi, I didn’t make potty training a big deal and both of my children were potty trained by age 2. I also bought the seat that attaches to the toilet and a stool. This was just my experience. Good luck. She’ll be potty trained before you know it.

Thanks! I gave in and bought the little potty when we were in Brooklyn bc I got tired of sitting in the bathroom and bc she had an easier time going #2 in more of a low squatting position:) Love the treasure box idea!

Good luck with potty training, being relaxed and consistent are the most important (imho). Thank goodness for wood floors instead of carpet, lol. It will all happen quicker than you think, really! Can’t wait to see the patio 🙂

About to potty train with my 2.5 year old on Thursday! Starting when they are ready is key—as is avoiding pullups during the day. A preschool director friend told us that the kids who take months to train and have more accidents are the ones whose parents do underwear sometimes and pull-ups/diapers when it’s convenient for them bc the kids don’t make mental shift. Night time can be a different story but my older daughter (while wearing a nighttime diaper) started to yell for us at night when she had to pee a few weeks after we potty trained her during the day.

Haha, I hope she doesn’t start yelling for me in the middle of the night. Yeah, I’m telling myself that we absolutely cannot go back to diapers during the day. Sending her to school in underpants tomorrow!

So many different potty training opinions out there!! It’s overwhelming. I just tried to keep in mind that all kids (with typical anatomy/development of course) will be potty trained eventually!! Whether by age 2 or age 4, it will happen. Hope you guys find a method that works for you 🙂 I’m sure you will!!

We followed the oh crap method when my daughter was 2 1/2 and it worked really well! She was telling us by day 3 when she had to pee. We also did it in anticipation of baby #2 arriving 3 months later as I did not want to deal with it when I had a newborn or have two in diapers! Good luck! We still do diapers at night as her body just isn’t ready yet and we’re not stressed about it.

Thanks! I would be thrilled just to save $$ in a few months worth of diapers, ha.

Potty training was my least favorite parenting task because of feeling stuck in the house and always needing to worry about finding a bathroom when we were out. It does get much easier rather quickly though. Your daughter will get the hang of it. It’s definitely a process though and we weren’t one of those “two days and it’s complete” kind of families. And guess what? It really didn’t matter that it took a little more time. My daughter is perfectly well trained and adjusted to using a toilet! Good luck and take whatever approach you feel comfortable with. That is what will impact your child the most- your sense of comfort and calmness with it.

Potty training was very easy, no accident, he alternated between potty and toilet (me too he prefered the potty) and by 2 and a half it was done. The key I think: he was interested, motivated and mature about it. So, I don’t know, I think we have to let them drive the train 🙂
