She’ll Be Comin’ ‘Round the Mountain

Life Travel Weekends

We planned a little mountain escape with Matt’s parents this weekend in Wintergreen, VA. We rented a condo through Airbnb and made the 4.5 hour drive on Wednesday afternoon. This is the first car trip of the summer where we started driving during Emerson’s nap and she actually fell asleep.  It was only an hour, but was so nice!

We were thrilled to arrive in Wintergreen  and find chilly mountain air.  We were all cold sitting out on the balcony and it was WONDERFUL!! We saw deer, a groundhog, and Matt’s parents saw a bear!!

We ventured outside on Thursday morning for maybe a .25 mile hike along the trail near our condo (that’s about as far as Em and I can walk when it involves climbing rocks) and then went down to the village for lunch at The Edge.

I put Emerson down for her her nap and then enjoyed reading on the deck while the Matt & his dad attempted to play golf and Matt’s mom worked a bit.  I barely read though because I couldn’t stop watching the changing sky.  A storm slowly rolled in and then I heard from Matt that they were headed back up the mountain because the storm never stopped in the valley for golf.  We headed out on another short walk and then enjoyed a leisurely cheese plate and dinner prepared by Matt’s mom on the deck. I brought some treats from my local bakery for dessert. I have been loving staying in lately.

Friday was warmer and we headed to the pool.  Emerson was thrilled to swim with her grandparents and I was thrilled to sit in the shade:) The men attempted round 2 of golf while Matt’s mom and I hung out, and then we headed down the mountain for dinner.

We met my sister & fam at Blue Mountain Brewery and it was awesome!  It was super hot, but they had the most amazing pizza (mine was the gf one in the bottom with cilantro, pesto, feta, jalapeño, zucchini, and eggplant)!!

There was a huge grassy area for Emerson and Mazen to play with literal blue mountains in the background.  I want to come back here on a crisp October night when it’s not 95 out!

Saturday, we made the 45 minute drive to Charlottesville to spend the final night of the trip with my sister.  We enjoyed lunch and the candy store on the downtown mall and then hit up a cute baby store while Emerson was napping. I made my first purchase for baby when I saw an adorable set of newborn and 3T matching pajamas!

We finished off the night with a delicious taco spread, sampling my sister’s  full line of Countertime products for a mini spa treatment, and Jeni’s ice cream.

Sunday was another brutally hot day, so I opted for a short Popsugar Fitness video while everyone else made the 1 mile walk to our brunch destination, The Bebedero.  I had the best mocktail made with fresh fruit juices and peppers, but it was so spicy I struggled to finish it.  We filled up on guac and chilaquiles before making the trek back to Charlotte. The weekend was such a nice mix of activities and a nice change of pace from the beach.

Other than a getaway without the toddler, that’s it for our summer travel.  Although it was exhausting to have back-to-back road trips, I’m so thankful  that we don’t have to fly everywhere now and could see lots of family and friends this summer!  Emerson asked me where we are going next and I said nowhere until Christmas because we will be waiting for your sister!!!!
