The less important advice I wish I had received before I had kids:)
- Get an upholstered headboard. You will be thankful you have something soft to lean against in the middle of the night because you will be awake in the middle of the night for various reasons for years.
- Never get too comfortable with a sleep schedule. It will likely change.
- Never buy white anything – your clothes, their clothes, household items…just don’t do it.
- Similar to introducing fruits before vegetables, don’t introduce ‘kid’ music before adult music because you can never go back.
- Don’t put all your eggs in one basket when it comes to vacations. Aka, don’t plan one big expensive trip. Someone will get sick or have sleep issues or be grumpy and you’ll wish you could try again.
- Get your hair on at least an every other day, if not every 2nd day, hair washing schedule.
- Find a way to de-stress that doesn’t involve alcohol or leaving your house.
- Be prepared to go swimming in very cold temperatures and in the rain.
- Never ever let anyone in the household get too hungry.
- Get a nice thick bathroom rug that you really enjoy sitting on for bath time and potty training. A stash of snacks is not a bad idea either (see #9).
What else?

Everything is a phase. The good and the bad! Don’t get too comfortable because things are always changing 🙂

March 8, 2020 at 3:56 amYou seem to not enjoy your kids much and that makes me sad for you. It’s always framed negatively. Would you be ok with them reading all of your posts one day?

March 8, 2020 at 5:06 pm11. Never criticize other moms – we should be lifting each other up and not putting each other down.
And yes, I hope to pass along what is supposed to be a humorous list to my daughters when they have kids some day!
