Black Lives Matter

Life Parenting

Hi Friends,

I didn’t feel right posting what I had originally planned, so I just wanted to pop on and say that Black lives matter to me! I’m sorry that it took police killing an innocent man for me to commit more time to learning and listening about how I can make a dent in the systemic racism in our country. But I won’t be silent and I can’t do nothing!  Just a few things I’m doing now:

-Started reading Me and White Supremacy.

-Watched 13th and will be working my way through this list:

-Talked to Emerson about what’s going on (this post is helpful). She already has two Black dolls (and I’ll get it another if she ever gets into dolls…) but I plan to order people color crayons (Crayola’s version) and more books with diverse main characters. Oh, and I’m about to watch this about race + kids on YouTube!

-Donating 10% of all Beautycounter sales in June (need a bit more time to research, but I’m leaning towards the Loveland Foundation, which helps Black women access therapy).

This isn’t an exhaustive list, but reading/listening + talking to my girls + uncomfortable conversations are sustainable and this is going to be a long fight. I know there’s a lot of performative activism going on right now – it was helpful for me to hear that there’s not one right way to respond to this situation (although there is only one right side).  You don’t have to quit your job and become a protest organizer, but choose a few things that are realistic, effective, and sustainable. Doing nothing is not an option.

Would love to hear more [positive] ideas in the comments!

Thanks for posting this! Another idea to share- a group of girlfriends and I are going to do a Zoom book club and are reading How To Be An Antiracist. I think reading and educating are as important as having some tough conversations about our own privilege. For me, this will be a good way to balance self-reflection and improvement with social discussion.

Use the knowledge you gain and participate in every local, state and national election. Pay close attention to what candidates say and do and vote for those that represent the United States you want to see.

I’ve been looking for artwork for my freshly painted living room and with so many links to amazing POC artists, I am inspired to support a POC when buying artwork. It may be a small thing, but it’s something I wouldn’t have even thought to consider before. Not that I wouldn’t have bought artwork from a POC, but I wouldn’t have made it a point to seek it out either. I will do other small things too to support this change in our country. Small things amount to something great if we all do them. One step at a time we can create change.
