Back Yard Makeover

Home Improvement

Hello! I wanted to share our lovely backyard – fall grass is so pretty! If you’ve followed along for a while, you might know we’ve had trouble with drainage and growing grass in our backyard.

Here’s what our yard looked like the we moved in two years ago:

We had drains installed and seeded the yard with fescue and here’s what it looked like after:

Grass was growing but it looked like weeds and wasn’t very high quality with lots of dry spots + soggy spots.

So then we had drainage basins installed and that helped a bit, but we pretty much always had a wet spot with mud along the patio. Fescue is also tough in the hot summers because it needs constant watering and attention. Exhibit A, dead grass because we left a pool outside for ONE DAY!

Even with the drainage basins, the area along the patio was always muddy, so we decided just to do gravel along our patio, which would also serve as a walking path to our side gate.

We made the yard area smaller with mulch around the exterior (to create interest and save money on sod), and then put down Zoysia grass! I’ve been eyeing this grass for a while, and I’m so excited about it! It’s drought tolerant (great for summer), super soft on barefoot, and doesn’t need mowing very often. We’re hoping to get an electric lawnmower eventually so that Matt can take over the mowing.

I love how it turned out! The grass is thriving and we’ve been playing in our backyard a lot more often!

Before we bought this house, I had no idea there are some many varietals of grass!

Happy Friday!

Really like the way it turned out! The edging on the sides and the addition of the tile definitely defines the space. Did you do any of the work yourselves?

Sadly, no. We talked to a friend who laid her own sod and would have needed to hire help + machinery, so decided against it.

Wow…..it’s beautiful! What a big difference from when you moved in. You mentioned getting an electric mower. We used to use one for years but switched to battery operated lawn equipment. Super convenient and no cord to worry about. 😉

He makes you do all the mowing until he gets an electric? Love it! We had a huge yard so my brother and I usually split it. Sometimes we’d do it over two days!
