Skincare & Beauty

Today marks 82 years since the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act created the first rules for the beauty industry.  Can you believe that with today’s science and knowledge of carcinogens and other harmful chemicals that the cosmetic act has yet to be updated? At present only 30 chemicals are banned from personal care products.  And what’s worse is that companies are not required to be transparent about what is in products.  Chemicals hidden under the term ‘Fragrance’ do not have to be reported on the label.

Read more about unequal exposure to toxic chemicals here.

I’ve blogged about this before, and many of you who follow me on Instagram know I get fired up about this stuff.  I don’t share to scare or shame anyone (fear mongering is NOT healthy), but to make you aware. Small changes can make a difference! Do I still use some products with questionable ingredients? Yup (thinking about that miracle foot balm I have since I can’t get a pedicure:)  Just don’t make the same mistake I made in assuming that companies are looking out of you.

I’m hoping that one day everyone will have access to safer products!

For now, here are some great brands that are making personal care products with safer ingredients (in addition to Beautycounter, obvi.:)

Primally Pure

Dolphin Organics

Thank you. I’ve relied on Leaping Bunny for cruelty-free’ shopping. Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics has formed as well.
